October’s Theme: Spiritual Warfare

What does Spiritual Warfare mean? It means that we are in a constant battle with the world and the schemes of the devil. Satan is always looking for a way to get a foothold on us and he uses worldly views and our sin to wage a war against us. However, the Apostle Paul, reminds us in Ephesians 6 that the Sword of the Spirit is the Word of God, and God’s Word is the armor that guards our entire soul.

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
Ephesians 6:12-17 (NIV)

Satan will use whatever he can to try and break us, whether it’s quarreling with a spouse, gossiping about a neighbor, judging people based on their social status, cultural upbringing, or political preference… the list goes on and on. But we, as Christians, have the Advocate, The Holy Spirit, living in us to fight this battle against the schemes of the devil. Here’s the deal, we all have battles to face within our daily lives and we are all challenged with different circumstances.  But if the Holy Spirit isn’t living in us, we have no advocate. This  means we open ourselves up to the devil to work his schemes and to deceive us into thinking we’re not good enough or we’re better than others. This is the lie. The lie that we only need ourselves to rely on.  The problem is that we are completely and utterly helpless without the Advocate, the Holy Spirit. Let’s be honest… on our own, we are not capable of doing anything without puffing out our own chests. However, as Christians, we’re called to humble ourselves and walk the life of service, the same way Christ did when He walked earth.

When we are born again into who God calls us to be, the Holy Spirit literally takes His rightful place and our souls become His residence. He nudges us and whispers to us that we are His. He reminds us that His plan is better than our own selfish wants and desires.

Choose God… His answer may not always be, “Yes,” to what we think it should be, it may actually be a, “No.” But that “No” that we get from God, may be that He knows there’s an even better, “Yes,” waiting for us down the road. Trust Him, read His word, and I promise that you will only long for the love, grace, faith, and forgiveness that only He can give. We mustn’t believe the schemes of the devil, as he will only bring death and destruction.  Put on the “full armor of God” and be confident in the fight… the battle is already won. Our victorious Savior brings to us a life filled with an effervescent hunger for spiritual growth and the desire to serve His people.

We look forward to taking an in-depth look at the topic of Spiritual Warfare this month. Thank you for taking this journey with us as we explore this crucial subject manner.
