If you have spent any time on Social Media over the past week or two, you have most likely heard about a question posed on Twitter by filmmaker, Amy Berg. She asked for followers to choose between four famous men named Chris, stating “One has to go..” and showed images of Chris Pratt, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Pine, and Chris Evans. Thousands of people were quick to share their thoughts and Chris Pratt emerged as “The Worst Hollywood Chris.”
Why? Well, you may know Chris Pratt as an actor for his roles in films such as Jurassic World, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers, and in the TV show Parks and Recreation. But in his personal life, you may not know that Chris describes himself as a Christian and boldly proclaims his love for Jesus within an industry that deems this type of testimony as unpopular and unacceptable. Although I do not know Chris Pratt personally, his friends describe him as a kind man who displays positivity and gratitude. When receiving praise and awards, he often uses that spotlight to bring attention and glory to his Savior and share the message of God’s love. The world’s response??? Countless messages filled with hate. Make no mistake, Chris is UNDER ATTACK from Satan for his strong faith in God; the devil is trying to use this situation to kill his spirit and bring him down. Sound familiar? Friends, as Christians, none of us are exempt from these attacks.
Through God’s Word, we are warned of spiritual attacks in 1 Peter 5 (NIV) when Peter states,
“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.”
We learn from God’s word that Satan is real and he comes to divide and destroy, using tactics “in order to tempt us, deceive us, draw us away from God, and fill our hearts with half-truths and untruths.” (Ingram 27) As Christians we must acknowledge that THE BATTLE IS REAL and not underestimate our adversary. BUT, the good thing is, we don’t have to live in fear because God doesn’t leave us hanging. In Ephesians 6:10 (NIV) He commands us to
“Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might”
It’s easy to forget sometimes when we are under attack, but be assured that God is fighting right there along with us, providing us with resources, strength, and protection.
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Joshua 1:9 (NIV)
Okay…with God by our side, how do we go about being strong then? Well, God directs us in Ephesians 6:11 (NIV) to
“Put on the full armor of God , so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.”
Paul then goes on to describe in verses 14-18 the specific pieces of armor you will need when going into battle, a battle with eternal implications. I don’t know about you, but when listening to sermons, I find it necessary to highlight and take notes in my bible so that I can refer back to them again and again to bring greater understanding. My notes helped me to break down and think about all of the parts to this important text:
So I ask you, in overcoming the tactics of the devil, how are we going to continue to draw from God’s strength, as described by Paul in Ephesians 3:20-21 (NIV)?
“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.”
As we fight from victory and resist the devil, how are we going to draw from the Holy Spirit working within us to make a lasting impact? Not all of us have a global platform to share God’s message, like “The Worst Hollywood Chris.” But how is God calling you to boldly share your faith in this broken world?
Like Chris Pratt, we may find ourselves under attack for our beliefs. There will always be those who are quick to judge us by the world’s standards. Just think though, Chris is imperfect like the rest of us, but he must be doing something right in order to draw the attention and be the focus of the devil’s schemes right now. When we too experience times in our lives such as these, we can stand firm together with confidence knowing God’s standards are all that matters.
To help brighten your week, here’s a clip of Chris Pratt’s funny and inspiring 2018 acceptance speech at the MTV Movie & TV Awards. (I would have left out number 7 though Chris, just saying 😀!!)
