Have you ever opened your computer trying to login to a particular webpage, only to notice your web browser was not loading quite as fast as expected? Or those moments while using your cell phone, you see it isn’t performing as it should? Instead, you notice the touchscreen does not recognize your finger press precisely at the same moment you need to answer that critical phone call. Better yet, how about the time you have been on an important phone call, only to have it lose its connection altogether. With urgency, you try to call back to convince your significant other that you did not hang-up on them. Good times, right? Not for me either.
Usually, when things like this start happening, there is one place you need to look at to find a solution before things can start working properly. That place is your system settings, where an update is usually waiting to be downloaded and installed. You see, like a phone or computer, you too have a system setting that needs checking from time to time. Unlike a phone, your system settings are easier to find, but harder to fix. That place to look is into your heart. Over these next few paragraphs, I pray that this will become the IT support for your soul that will help you restore your connection to Christ.
When was the last time you checked to see if you have a pending update in your spiritual life? When was the last time you read your Bible? One day? Two days? Maybe a week ago? Hopefully, it hasn’t been that long… If it has been, there is no better day to start than today. You see, not reading the Bible is the same as unplugging your data cable on your internet router. No cable, no connection. Without the link, the router becomes a box collecting dust. Talk about not living up to its potential! Do you see where I am going with this? God’s word is our data cable and you are the router. You’re not going to perform spiritually without being plugged into the creator. This link through the Word of GOD is essential for the updates to reach your heart.
Similarly, a router sends and receives information that you can see on a screen. Our hearts are made to do the same. We react outwardly in a way that reflects the way our hearts feel on the inside. Put what you take in, or the lack of shows.
But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.
James 2:18 (ESV)
GOD’s word speaks to us in two stages: the download phase and the install phase. Today, most Christians are stuck in the download phase. It starts fast at first; this is when the excitement is fresh. That excitement can be in the form of a new church, new friends, or a new relationship with Jesus Christ. Still, if we continue our Christian walk without reading the Bible daily, the connection gets blocked, and the download begins to slow down. Before we even know it, it can stop altogether. It is keeping us down, without ever wanting to try again. Without Jesus, none of us never will.
Do you get excited when you read God’s Word, or does it feel more like a chore? If you find yourself reading the Bible less often, you can bet that it’s because you have lost connection. It is this disconnect mentioned in Colossian 2:19 (NIV):
“They have lost connection with the head (Christ), from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow.”
In other words, no Bible, no connection, no growth.
Let us look at it another way. Now that you may have your spiritual update downloaded, ask yourself this… Are you fully experiencing the benefits of the new update? Are you still having connection issues? Are you holding onto a sinful habit that you have not confessed to God? Is your Christ-like functionality operating correctly? Or are you being led by emotions like pride, anger, and lust? If that is the case, it could be because you have not installed the update yet. You see, the install is the essential part of the download. The old programming is deleted during the installation, so the new set of directions can become primary. In like manner, this is when we allow the Holy Spirit to clean us out. This is so Christ can take up permanent residence inside us.
Friends, remember, just like in the download phase, the install’s speed is directly related to your connection to Christ. Again, I ask you…What does your relationship with GOD’s word look like? Are you going to God in prayer? Are you staying in contact with your brothers and sisters in Christ? Are you allowing God’s words to guide you and grow you? Friends, take this time and do a self-spiritual diagnostic check. Stay connected to Jesus, receive his new update, and install it in your heart. God bless you all!
